Drifter - Commercial Accomodation
Drifter Hybrid Hotel in Christchurch revitalises the city centre with its bold interior, contrasting the previously muted tones of post-earthquake construction.
This 95-room hybrid hotel/hostel is housed in the historic Wellington Woollen Manufacturing Company Building, designed by William Henry Gummer in 1919.
The project was a multi-team collaboration. The outcome blends heritage and modernity, enhancing the building's original features while incorporating significant structural upgrades.
The hybrid hotel's design celebrates its historical significance, offering multifunctional spaces and communal areas, including wellness studios and a restaurant. This project not only restores a key heritage site but also contributes to the urban renewal of Christchurch, showcasing a seamless integration of past and present architectural elements.

“Aaron and the team at Urbanfunction were fundamental in developing the first Drifter Hotel, from concept through to delivery of our flagship Drifter in Christchurch, which is already an award-winning property. I consider Aaron a partner in Drifter and a key element in the success of that project. We look forward to collaborating again on the next one.”
