Clever spaces characterise this home by Built Chch, Urbanfunction Architecture & The Home Maker

This thoughtfully crafted family home in Sumner is a collaboration between Built CHCH, Urbanfunction Architecture, and interior designer Abbie Herniman of The Home Maker. Designed for builder Karl Saunders and designer Hat Hall, the home balances practical family living with refined design.

With a long, narrow site and strict site coverage rules, the team used clever architectural moves to maximise space, from a gabled façade that conceals a generous interior to a secret mezzanine kids’ zone tucked into the roof cavity. Textural materials, soft curves, and earthy tones create a warm, spa-like calm inside, even amidst the chaos of life with three kids and a dog.

Hat’s refined style, Karl’s building expertise, and Abbie’s soulful interiors come together in a home that’s both resilient and beautiful — a sanctuary for a busy modern family.
