129 high

129 High, formerly the BNZ bank and Ace Video building, is a historic structure in the heart of Christchurch. After being significantly damaged during the 2011 earthquakes and subsequently condemned, our brief was to restore the heritage building to its former glory while creating a functional mixed-use development housing two ground-floor commercial spaces and apartments on the two upper floors.

The restoration of 129 High prioritised heritage value and sustainability. The building underwent structural restrengthening, restoration and alterations to preserve its history and a new roof terrace studio apartment was added. Both apartments are accessed via a new triangular spiral staircase and lift.

The materials and finishes were selected to celebrate the building's history and prioritise sustainability. These included retained steel window frames and the use of recycled building timbers, brick and recyclable aluminium tiles.

The restoration showcases a unique blend of historical preservation and modern design in the city centre, reestablishing 129 High as the cornerstone of the precinct.
