Renovation
Mid-Century New Zealand and Palm Springs 1950s House Renovation.
Originally built in the 1950s, this mid-century beach house underwent a complete renovation and redesign in 2019, with Urbanfunction Architecture leading the architectural transformation.
Set on a sunny, secluded 855m² section, the design breathes new life into the home while preserving its mid-century spirit. The open-plan living, dining, and bespoke oak kitchen are centred around a spectacular full-width picture window, flooding the interior with natural light and creating a strong connection to the outdoors.
Throughout the home, original elements such as rimu flooring, brass hardware, breezeblocks, and exposed brick have been thoughtfully retained and seamlessly integrated with contemporary upgrades. Fully rebuilt from the framing, with new insulation, double glazing, re-roofing, and updated services, the renovation ensures enduring comfort and performance.
The first floor features three bedrooms and a bathroom adorned with handmade tiles and aged brass fittings, while the private master suite upstairs offers a calm retreat overlooking the hills. Outdoor spaces reflect the home's beachside setting, with lush palms, succulents, fruit trees, and an outdoor shower enhancing the relaxed coastal atmosphere.
This project was chosen for the cover of Homestyle Magazine’s 100th issue — a testament to its successful balance of character, craftsmanship, and contemporary living.
